The mission of the Commission's Division of Dam Safety and Inspections (D2SI) is to protect life, health, and property, and the environment around our jurisdictional hydroelectric projects. This is carried out through implementation of FERC's dam safety, physical security, cybersecurity, risk informed decision making, and public safety programs. D2SI is responsible for the implementation of these programs at over 2,500 non-federally owned hydroelectric dams.
D2SI is focused on the performance of its regulated structures (e.g. dams, powerhouses, water conveyance systems, etc.) during construction and operation. It is through routine inspections, analyses, and monitoring which can lead to the identification of potential dam safety issues. This work is conducted by staff located in our five Regional Offices (Atlanta, Chicago, Portland, OR, New York, San Francisco), and our Headquarters Office in Washington, D.C.
