Jacob Smith is a geologist and GIS specialist with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) under the Divison of Energy Mineral and Land Resources (DEMLR). He has just over 2 years of experience in dam safety and over 5 years experince in Environmental Consulting and is passionate about using his skills to protect communities from dam failures. In his role as a geologist, Jacob is responsible for reviewing applications and recommending appropriate hazard classifications to both new and existing dams across the state. He also uses GIS to create maps and models that help NCDEQ prioritize and plan for dam safety projects. As the GIS specialist, Jacob manages a database of over 6,000 dams in North Carolina and has developed several tools that use ArcGIS Online to automate tasks and improve the efficiency of dam safety inspections. Jacob is committed to ensuring the safety of dams and the communities they serve across North Carolina.
