CS19B - Concurrent Session 19: Shake, Quake, and Tremble – Seismic Events and their Impact on Dams (Recent Highlights from DamFailures.org)

This session will consist of a brief introduction and update on new content on ASDSO’s DamFailures.org website followed by presentations from authors of recent website additions centered around the theme of seismic loading conditions and seismic induced failures. Presentations are as follows:

1. Brief Intro/Update on DamFailures.org (Seth Thompson)

2. Lesson Learned: Dams located in seismic areas should be evaluated for liquefaction, cracking, potential fault offsets, deformations, and settlement due to seismic loading. (Everett Taylor)

3. Case Study: Hebgen Dam and Quake Lake (Shane McWilliams)

4. Case Study: Sheffield Dam (Cory Miyamoto)

5. Case Study: Langley Dam (Jeff Munsey)

6. Discussion – The Need to Evaluate and Account for these Somewhat Rare but Real Seismic-Related Risks (Seth Thompson)

As a result of this session, the Dam Failures and Incidents Committee hopes to further promote participation and use of DamFailures.org, and promote learning from the past seismic-induced incidents and failures that will be presented.
